Leatherman Charge TTi: Gear Review

November 15, 2011 By Mike

I had some birthday money burning a hole in pocket so it was off to Amazon to pick up a new toy, a Leatherman 830685 Charge TTi with Nylon Sheath. In a word it is awesome. I sort of feel like Batman but without the bother of the whole utility belt. I’ve been a fan of Leatherman since I used my old Wave to fix my Jeep on the side of the road on a rainy day. My alarm fob was shorting out and triggering my ignition kill. I used my Wave to take apart my dash and cut the alarm brain out. I haven’t been without one since!
Leatherman Charge TTi Review

Leatherman Charge TTi

First off the Charge has all the goodies you would expect to find in a high end multi-tool:

  • Titanium handles (exclusive to TTi)
  • Needlenose pliers
  • Regular pliers
  • Wire cutters
  • Hard-wire cutters
  • S30V Clip-point knife (exclusive to TTi)
  • Saw
  • Serrated knife
  • Wood/metal file
  • Diamond-coated file
  • Scissors
  • Large bit driver
  • Small bit driver
  • 9 double-end bits
  • Ruler (8 inch)
  • Bottle/can opener
  • Wire stripper
  • fixed lanyard ring
  • Quick-release lanyard ring
  • Removable pocket clip

I find the bit drivers to be the most interesting part of this tool. Instead of having to compromise on which screwdriver heads to include in a multi-tool the bit drivers allow you to change from one size or style of driver to another. Now compromise is not an option! If you need a flat head by all means use it! Need a Torx head? Got you covered.

Another real nice feature is that the knife blades can be accessed one handed and without opening the tool up. Since I use the Charge for cutting chores most of all, this is a great feature.

I had a small fencing project to tackle and figured I would use the Charge to see how it stacked up.

Using the S30v blade!
Using the cutters!

All in all the Charge performed just as I thought it would…Awesome! I’ll admit that it gets the job done but does suffer a bit from the Jack of All Trades-Master of None Syndrome. I find it at its best when you don’t want to walk back to the truck or back into the garage to get the dedicated tool, the Charge is handy and, will get the job done. The Charge will be staying on my hip and I eagerly await the arrival of the bit driver extension and the expanded bit selection which I may or may not have also ordered depending upon whether I am married to you and you’re reading this.

(Check out my old review of the Spyderco Endura 4 for more good pocket tools.)

Well there is my honest opinion of the Leatherman Charge TTi.

Thanks for the review, I was just looking at multi-tools a couple of days ago so this review is timely!

    Hi Mike,
Yes, thanks for the review. I’ve been thinking about these tools and wondering what would be best for me being a beekeeper, mushroom hunter, camper, and geocacher. I’ll have to look into this Leatherman.

      Mil,
You don’t need to get all crazy like I did and buy the top of the line one. Leatherman has a bunch of different multi-tools at different price points. I went over the top because I had some b-day cash burning a hole in my pocket and I work as a Lineman and the extra tools do come in handy. The Blast or the Squirt offer a nice selection of tools but aren’t to heavy or hard on your wallet.
      Hope this helps,
      Mike

Yes Mike, very helpful. But it is so hard NOT to get the one with all the tools! Thanks.

Nice review. Love Leatherman…I think have 5 Leatherman MTs now. Have you seen the new MTs they debuted at Show Show?

I saw a few YouTube videos of them. They look pretty cool.
